Job Summary/Basic Function:

To lead a comprehensive planned giving program consistent with the overall direction of the university’s development effort. To cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts using various planned giving vehicles and in partnership with unit-based development professionals. To guide a planned gift donor stewardship strategy, and effectively steward planned gifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree
3 years of demonstrated success in gift planning or 5 years of demonstrated success as a fundraiser with an emphasis on planned giving.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree

Essential Functions and percent of time:

50%: Provide leadership for the planned giving program.
•Develop and manage a portfolio of up to 75 prospective donors and develop strategies to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward these individuals.
•Maintain an active schedule of face-to-face visits with prospective donors in each stage of the solicitation cycle, working actively toward closing major gifts to the university.
•Train, counsel, and coach other university leadership, development professionals, and volunteer board members on planned giving vehicles and strategies.
•Build a strong network of estate attorneys, financial advisors, trust officers, and accountants and serve as a resource for each group to ensure they are well versed on the advantages of planned giving.
•Manage and engage the existing planned giving advisory council to assist in the realization of planned giving goals.

15%: Develop and oversee planned giving marketing and education.
•Disseminate marketing materials that describe planned giving options and outline benefits of each.
•Identify key demographic segments of the prospect pool and select tools to promote.
•Develop and oversee planned gift marketing through a dedicated website and targeted electronic communications.
•Manage planned giving vendor.

15%: Create a planned gift donor stewardship strategy in concert with the Director of Donor Relations.
•Collaborate with Donor Relations on stewardship opportunities including invitations to special functions in the arts, athletics, and academics.
•Assist with annual recognition events designed to provide ongoing appreciation for legacy giving.

10%: Maintain knowledge of estate planning techniques and tax laws relative to charitable gift planning.

Essential Functions and percent of time (cont'd):

10%: Serves as a member of the central development staff and attends to emergent initiatives that require the engagement of this team.

Non-Essential Functions and percent of time:
Working Conditions

•This position reports to the President of the Foundation and is a member of the Leadership Team.
•This position does not supervise or direct the work of others. However, this position is highly collaborative and interacts frequently with the Unit Development Officers.
•The Director has responsibility for budget oversight of the Planned Giving Budget.
